Find a “Little Free Library” near you

A Little Free Library near downtown Geneva

You know those mini library structures (I call them “book birdhouses”) you occasionally encounter in some of the front yards in your neighborhood?

There’s an official name for them: Little Free Libraries.

Maybe I’m just late to the game, but until recently, I didn’t realize that they’re part of an organized worldwide network of such miniature libraries run by a Minnesota-based nonprofit that aims to make books freely accessible 24/7 to all.

The concept is simple — take a book, leave a book. Playing around with the organization’s interactive online map, you’ll find dozens across the Tri-Cities area. Many listings feature photos, contact info, and the backstory behind that particular mini library.

By my count, there are 14 in Batavia, 16 in Geneva, 25 in St. Charles, three in North Aurora, and six each in Mill Creek, Campton Hills, and Elburn. I even found some folks I knew on there.

☀️ Pull up a chair and enjoy one of the best patios in the Tri-Cities

Guess who has extended Saturday hours just in time for patio season?

Maple Leaf Coffee House in downtown St. Charles is now open until 5PM on Saturdays, which works out great — it’s one of the most coveted outdoor seats in town, right on the Fox River.

No reservations, no rush. Just a comfortable riverfront table, a scratch-made breakfast or lunch, and a leisurely morning or afternoon watching the kayakers and fly fishermen do their thing.

Bonus: They’re hosting their next interactive syrup-making class on May 21 — a sweet opportunity to level up your culinary skills.

Final word: Driving through the construction chaos that is East State Street in Geneva this weekend, I couldn’t help but sympathize with the businesses along that corridor. Even if (like me) you’re frequently opting for alternate routes, don’t forget to keep supporting those spots.
