A stretch of downtown St. Charles is getting a closer look (and possibly a makeover) as the city works to address growing congestion and safety concerns where bikes, cars, and pedestrians increasingly compete for space.

Here's what to know:

  • A busy little area: The project focuses on Riverside Avenue between Route 64 and Illinois Avenue, a stretch that's seen a surge in business activity and heavy cyclist traffic along the regional bike route.

  • What's being proposed: The city is exploring a contract with an engineering firm to explore street improvements and create a more cohesive connection to the Fox River Trail. The contract still needs full City Council approval.

  • Why it matters: Officials said that increased car, bike, and pedestrian activity in the area has led to more traffic issues and safety concerns, especially since drivers also tend to search for parking in the area when visiting downtown.

City officials plan to hold a public meeting eventually to gather resident input, so don’t expect shovels in the ground anytime soon.
