Before paying a lawyer for help navigating an eviction, divorce, or driver’s license reinstatement, check out Kane County’s free resources.

Volunteer attorneys host free 15-minute sessions every week at the county’s court buildings in St. Charles and Geneva. These primarily walk-in sessions cover family law, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims, and driver’s license reinstatement.

Here’s what to know:

  • Divorce and family law: Family law attorneys answer brief questions for people handling their own Kane County case without a lawyer. Walk in Mondays from 8:30-10:30AM at the Kane County Law Library & Self Help Legal Center, on the 2nd floor of the Kane County Judicial Center (37W777 Route 38, St. Charles).

  • Lawyer in the lobby: The Kane County Bar Association’s Lawyer in the Lobby program offers quick consultations on civil matters, meaning non-criminal issues like evictions, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims, and name changes. Walk in Fridays from 9AM-noon at the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St. in Geneva.

  • Getting your license back: The monthly Drivers Privilege Clinic helps people work through getting their driving privileges reinstated. It runs from 3-5PM on the first Wednesday of every month at the Law Library inside the Judicial Center, and no reservation is needed. Get more info here.

  • Ask a lawyer: On the second Saturday of each month from 9AM to 12PM, folks can use this call-in service for a free consultation with a volunteer attorney about any legal matters you may have. Call 630-762-1900.

The 16th Judicial Circuit runs six courthouses across Kane County. The circuit’s website has more information.
