🐺 Coyote season is here

📸 Credit: NBC 5 Chicago

Have you seen the video going around of a coyote being discovered hiding in the refrigerated section of a Chicago Aldi this week?

Absolutely wild. And it was removed without incident, thank goodness.

If you haven’t seen one in person this season, there’s a solid chance you’ve seen coyote photos posted online or heard your neighbors discussing sightings.

According to local wildlife experts, coyotes are most active in the suburbs between January 15 and February 15 — i.e. right now.

Though they breed in early spring, coyotes are generally more visible during the winter months simply because less vegetation means fewer places to hide out. Plus, they’re spending more time foraging for food (I can relate).

Local authorities are tasked with balancing public safety (the number one concern) with the environmental benefit of maintaining natural ecosystems, which can be a challenge.

Local guidance

Here’s some useful info if you have a serious issue with coyotes in the Tri-Cities:

  • Batavia: In the event of a coyote sighting or problem, the city’s website directs residents to contact Scientific Wildlife Management, a company that specializes in the removal of sick or habituated coyotes. The city also offers facts and tips for effective coyote managment.

  • Geneva: The city approved an official coyote management plan in 2015 and encourages residents to report coyote sightings to the police department as they monitor the population.

  • St. Charles: The city’s website suggests calling 911 and providing the Tri-Com communications center with as much information as you can. They’ll then dispatch an officer to determine the extent of the problem and whether the city can assist. If not, the officer may suggest either Kane County Animal Control or a private service to address the issue.

More resources

The wildlife biologists with the Urban Coyote Research Project have compiled over 20 years of data, field observations and case studies to help us understand coyote ecology and behavior in our modern environment.

They’ve got great tips on how to avoid conflict as well.
