Ranking every suburb: Where’d your town land?

The folks at Chicago Magazine recently completed an ambitious undertaking: analyzing and ranking each of the Chicagoland area’s 205 suburbs.
When such lists are published, a robust debate often follows. Hometown pride can understandably lead to territorial feelings, or perhaps even a twinge of jealousy (“you ranked LISLE 60 spots ahead of Batavia!?”).
But before you allow any perceived injustice to cloud your vision, it’s worth noting that this ranking relied entirely on data (not editorial judgment), specifically focused on community diversity, housing appreciation, education, safety, and a few other factors.
Which doesn’t mean some of the commentary won’t raise an eyebrow or two.
For example, the article asserts that Geneva “boasts a downtown that feels a little like Wicker Park.” I love Geneva, but as someone who lived in Wicker Park for several years before moving back to the Tri-Cities, that one feels like a stretch.
Where the Tri-Cities rank: Not only was Geneva the only town in the wider Tri-Cities area to land in the top 10 — no other local community cracked a top 50 ranking.
