An extremely cold weekend in the Tri-Cities

Heading into the weekend, the arctic conditions were the talk of the town.

Several local businesses temporarily closed, schools closed (or went to e-learning), the Kane County courts went remote, a couple of city facilities shut down due to burst pipes or broken heating systems, and local warming centers opened to those who needed them.

I’m admittedly a sucker for weather phenomenons of all types, but it seems like nothing captures people’s imaginations quite like an old-fashioned deep freeze.

For example, during this weekend’s cold front, several odd and/or unfamiliar weather topics made their way into the public discourse:

  • Exploding trees: Apparently this is a real thing, although very rare and “blown out of proportion” according to a horticulturalist from the Morton Arboretum.

  • Icequakes: If you heard a loud popping noise or felt a slight tremor over the weekend, this could’ve been the culprit.

  • The Great Lake Jumper: I’ve actually been following this guy since he began his daily jumps into Lake Michigan during the pandemic (he hasn’t missed a day since, including this weekend). Worth seeing him in action if you haven’t yet.

To put it all in perspective, it was very cold this weekend — but not record-breaking.

For reference: the coldest day on record for the Chicago area was -27 degrees January 20, 1985 (with a wind chill of -60 degrees).
