We put it to readers: what's your go-to date night agenda around the Tri-Cities?
The answers ranged from classic to refreshingly unexpected.
In some cases, the responses surfaced the types of outings that you might expect — dinner, drinks, and maybe a stop for some sweets.
Others brought out a more distinctive local perspective. Busy parents might sneak in a mid-morning coffee at a local shop and a quick stroll through the park as a break from the chaos. Others enjoy a riverfront picnic before browsing their favorite downtown shops.
Several folks mentioned plays, musical performances, live comedy, and a nightcap at a local watering hole.
Here’s what we learned.
A night on the (down)town
If the most popular theme had a motto, it might be this: park downtown, then start walking.
Here’s a sampling of some specific reader suggestions:
Batavia
Option 1: Dinner at The Goat or Tusk Thai, a show at The Comedy Vault or Albright Theatre, then a nightcap at Sturdy Shelter Brewing.
Option 2: Stroll the Batavia Riverwalk on a Sunday, grab a pizza to go from Riverside, then post up at Geneva Winery (Batavia location) for a glass of wine while listening to bluegrass music from across the street at Sidecar Supper Club.
Geneva
Option 1: An afternoon of shop browsing (GROW Geneva for plants, Bee Coco Candle for candles, Little Red Barn Door for gifts), followed by dinner at Stockholm's, then closing the evening with drinks at Bad Alice.
Option 2: Order to-go appetizers from Mosaic Kitchen, Portofino, or El Molcajete, then pop over to Geneva Wine Cellars for a glass of wine on their patio (check out the self-pour wine taps inside). Finish it off with some live music at Preservation.
St. Charles
Option 1: Some candy indulgence at Rocket Fizz before dinner at La Zaza Trattoria, then a walk across the river for an evening of live music at Pollyanna Brewing.
Option 2: Fine dining at The Graceful Ordinary, then a quick trip to the Baker Community Center for its Saturday Night Lights concert series.
Other regular spots
A few establishments and activities appeared several times.
Folks highlighted The Lewis for its intimate vibe and some of the best cocktails in the area. Sturdy Shelter kept coming up as well — for pre-dinner beers, post-meal drinks, and a trivia-night favorite. Walrus Room in Geneva is a go-to cocktail spot as well.
When the weather cooperates, picnics are popular. Readers highlighted Mt. St. Mary Park in St. Charles, Peck Farm Park in Geneva, and Headwaters Conservation Area in Campton Hills as scenic spots to relax over an outdoor meal.
As it turns out, walking hand-in-hand with dual ice cream cones isn't just something that happens in rom-coms. One reader said no date night is complete without ice cream from Graham’s in Geneva, and others listed Kimmer’s as a key component to any downtown St. Charles outing.
Fox River Trail bikers weighed in too, highlighting Batavia Creamery as a great stop for a treat during a cycling excursion and Alter Brewing in St. Charles as a convenient spot to end the trip with a pint and a delicious meal.
Not everyone prefers someone to cook for them — Rosewood Farm & Market in Batavia offers cooking classes that turn dinner prep into the date itself.
Classic dinner options
Evidently, Tri-Cities folks enjoy a nice Italian dinner date night. La Zaza Trattoria in St. Charles is a go-to spot for several locals, as are Villa Verone in Geneva and Portofino (locations in both Geneva and St. Charles).
Italian lovers don’t have to commit to a sit-down dinner, though. One reader suggested grabbing the $8 spaghetti to-go special at Chianti’s in Geneva, then walking over to Art History or Penrose Brewing to enjoy it with a cold drink.
Readers also highlighted the vibrant patio at Livia Italian Eatery in downtown Geneva and its equally inviting dining room (they offer some enticing weekday specials). The new fire + wine location at Fox Haven Square in St. Charles appears to be a frequent date-night destination as well.
For a classic steakhouse experience, St. Charles Place may have the food and vintage ambiance you’re looking for. Sorrento’s Restaurant in Maple Park may not be located in the Tri-Cities proper, but locals are willing to travel for the unique supper club experience.
The best of the rest
One couple said they buy season tickets to the Paramount's Broadway series specifically to lock in four date nights a year, where there are plenty of quality dinner options nearby (like ARTHOUSE, same owner as The Goat in Batavia).
And don’t forget the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, where you can partake in dinner, a show, and after-dinner drinks all in the same building.
Another reader's favorite doesn’t come around often at all — it's the annual Long Table Dinner for Project Mobility, their once-a-year excuse to dress up for a good cause.
Some folks like to keep it casual, and that’s okay too. The patio at Riverlands Brewing is a popular spot for beers, food trucks, and live music during warmer weather months, and both Funway (Batavia) and St. Charles Bowl offer a classic bowling date night experience for colder winter days.
