🪕 Folk traditions and family fun this weekend

📸 Credit: Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival

The Fox Valley Folklore Society has been a local champion of music, dance, and storytelling for 50 years, and this weekend their biggest celebration of the year returns to Wheeler Park in Geneva.

A Labor Day tradition since 1976, the Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival will offer six stages of continuous performances, hands-on workshops, and plenty of family activities. It strikes me as a curious combination of music, art, and block party vibes — definitely not your typical community festival.

This year’s lineup features about 20 featured performers alongside local musicians, plus special highlights like the Sunday evening barn dance (6–7:30PM) followed by “Spine-Tingling Stories After Dark” (7:30–9PM), where storytellers spin eerie tales by lantern light Goosebumps-style.

In addition to the music, creative vendors will be showcasing their art and a Kids Zone will be the place to go for games and activities. Several food trucks will set up shop as well.

Some background on the organizers

Founded in Aurora in 1975, the all-volunteer Fox Valley Folklore Society has grown into a local cultural hub, hosting weekly sing-arounds, monthly storytelling sessions, and now preparing to celebrate the festival’s 50th anniversary in 2026.

🏚️ Checking in on Geneva’s blacksmith shop

The blacksmith shop on Geneva’s riverfront has a storied history — serving several different businesses and eventually becoming part of the Mill Race Inn. During the several years it’s been vacant, the structure has spurred preservation activism, lawsuits, and plenty of debate.

In his latest video, local real estate expert Chris Wallace visited the historic site to shed light on the past and make sense of where we’re at now.

🎸 Live music

Upon popping into Bad Alice in Geneva last Thursday night, I discovered a live music duo in full swing. First I was delighted, then a little confused…how did the performance evade my systemic scouring of the local live music landscape? Impressive.

Subsequent attempts to discover a public schedule for music at Bad Alice have failed. Just wanted you to know that, on occasion, you’ll find live music there.
