Another name is now in the mix to replace retiring Sen. Don DeWitte of St. Charles. Elgin Republican Cody Holt has announced he’s running for the GOP nomination in the 33rd District, a seat that covers parts of St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, and other communities in Kane and McHenry counties.

Key things to know:

  • Holt will run against Jessica Breugelmans of the Geneva area.

  • DeWitte, who has held the seat since 2018, is not seeking reelection but will serve out his term through January 2027.

  • Holt, a millennial Republican, says he wants to represent his generation and push back against high taxes and economic challenges that he argues are driving young families out of Illinois.

  • His political background includes a term on the Elgin U-46 school board and previous runs for Elgin City Council and the Kane County Board.
