Happy Labor Day

This 1993 issue of the Kane County Chronicle looks back at the history of Labor Day in the Fox Valley — including the key role played by Moline Malleable Iron Corp. in St. Charles.

Evidently, the company at one point employed more than 800 area residents before it closed in 1991. Here’s some more interesting history if you’re curious.

The old newspaper also included this delightful feature:

🍷 It’s Vine Time in Geneva

It’s not quite on the level of Swedish Days, but Festival of the Vine is a big deal in Geneva.

Organized by the Geneva Chamber, the annual three-day event kicks off at noon on Friday (9/6) and runs through 4PM on Sunday (9/8).

Originally intended as a celebration of “anything that grows on a vine,” the festival’s scope has expanded over the years to include local food vendors, beer vendors and a wide variety of activities.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Cuisine: 15+ local restaurants will be dishing out food samples.

  • Music: Nine artists/bands are set to perform live over the weekend.

  • Activities: Several downtown businesses will be hosting special events and parties — or offering in-store specials.

  • Families: A kids zone near the courthouse will feature crafts and balloon artistry.

  • Equestrian fun: Horse-drawn carriage rides will be available Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Here’s where you’ll find the full schedule and details on the items listed above.

Planning ahead: The event will require several downtown street closures throughout the weekend. View them here.
