Batavia is set to implement significant changes to Route 31 this fall, aiming to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Here's what residents need to know:
The road will be reduced from four lanes to three between Fabyan Parkway and Mooseheart Road (except for between Houston and Elm streets).
A center lane will be designated for left turns to reduce incidents.
Construction is expected to begin around September 16 and conclude by October 31, pending IDOT approval.
The total project cost will be about $220K.
A separate study is underway for the Houston to Elm street section.
The "road diet" is in response to a fatal pedestrian accident and numerous near-misses that occurred in 2023. These changes aim to slow traffic and enhance safety along this busy corridor.
