Daddio's Diner, the old-school Batavia breakfast restaurant known for its retro decor and "No Way Jose" special, will close its doors on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The Beltran family, which owns the diner, announced the closure on social media, citing rising food costs and an expiring lease on the downtown space.

Here's what to know:

  • A nearly two-decade run: Scott and Terry Beltran opened Daddio's in 2007, reworking the space into a throwback diner reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s. The “Daddio” name stems from a nickname Scott’s daughter bestowed upon him.

  • A community staple: Locals embraced the restaurant for more than just the food. The Beltrans have run a Pay It Forward program that allows customers to buy “Cup of Kindness” tickets for others, which contributes to donations of food and toys through local drives over the years.

  • Final weeks: The diner plans to stay open through Sept. 23, and the owners are encouraging regulars to stop in for a last meal before then.

From the social media announcement:

We hope that these final weeks feel like a wonderful and loving goodbye celebration as we get to see all the faces we’ve known and loved for 20 years so we can feed you one last time. We need your support now more than ever. Please stop in for a bite, order up your favorite meal, grab one of Mommio’s Chocolate Chip Cookies while you can, and celebrate what a special place this diner has been.

The Wilson Street building has been home to a diner since the 1960s. Prior to Daddio’s taking over, Kathy’s Diner occupied the space.
