Local veteran organizations have been busy.

The St. Charles American Legion Post 342 recognized a group of impressive 8th graders at recent school awards ceremonies. In addition, the St. Charles VFW introduced an innovative flag program aimed at funding youth activities in the community.

Honoring “fine young men and women”

At the May awards events, the Legion bestowed their prestigious School Awards upon six students from St. Patrick Catholic School, Wredling Middle School and Thompson Middle School. The honorees were selected by faculty for embodying qualities like courage, patriotism, honor, leadership, service and scholarship.

In addition to receiving certificates, the standout students were presented with special medals featuring the American Legion's core values on one side and the U.S. Marine Corps motto "Semper Fidelis" (always faithful) on the other.

Principals expressed their gratitude for the Legion's decades-long tradition of recognizing exceptional young citizens. Click here to read a Daily Herald article about the awards.

A patriotic subscription service

The St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) kicked off their new Patriots Promise Campaign — an initiative enabling residents to subscribe to a seasonal American flag service while simultaneously supporting local scouting and other youth programs.

For an annual $100 fee, subscribers will have an illuminated US flag mounted on a 10-foot pole and installed in their front yards for display on six national holidays throughout the year. The VFW has coordinated with city officials to ensure the campaign aligns with municipal guidelines.

Organizers stated the dual goals are promoting community patriotism through proper flag etiquette and generating funds to nurture St. Charles' next generation of leaders.

Both the American Legion and VFW expressed their steadfast commitment to upholding American values and cultivating engaged young citizens.
