Veterans Center at 311 N. 2nd St. Suite 109 (Route 31) St Charles.
For the fourth consecutive year, the four veteran organizations in St. Charles — VFW, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America and AMVETS — joined forces with Girl Scout Troop 400 and the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois to distribute boxes of cookies to veterans in the community.
The annual initiative, a heartwarming collaboration between the veteran groups and Girl Scouts, brought joy and appreciation to 150 veterans residing in local retirement homes, nursing facilities, the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, plus those who are homebound.
Through the generosity of veterans, local businesses, the public, and the Girl Scouts themselves, a remarkable 934 boxes of cookies were collected and distributed. This meant that every veteran received an unexpected treat and a reminder that their service is not forgotten.
"The recipients were thankful for the unexpected treat and being remembered," said Rich Zawislak of St. Charles VFW Post 5036. “The veterans want to thank everyone who contributed to this effort.”
This community of local veteran organizations leverages the compassion, generosity and thoughtfulness of its partners to consistently serve those who wore the uniform. The cookies not only brought smiles to the faces of the veterans but also served as a heartfelt symbol of appreciation for their sacrifices.
These groups also provide rides and meals to local veterans and help them with things like registering for the VA, finding dental/health care, connecting to other veterans and much more.
