Back in 1973, twelve people started meeting for a Thursday night spiritual study group in a local’s kitchen.
Fast forward to today, and that unique community — now known as Unity of Fox Valley — is celebrating its 50th year as a congregation with a special weekend of good food, music, and plenty of surprises on September 4 and 5.
Here's what to know:
Friday night gala: The first night the Batavia church has planned features dinner, music, and dancing at the Lincoln Inn on September 4 starting at 6PM. The evening includes a 50/50 raffle alongside silent and live auctions. Tickets are $50 per person with a cash bar. RSVP by August 16.
Saturday concert: Award-winning singer-songwriter Daniel Nahmod headlines a concert at Unity of Fox Valley on September 5 at 6PM, joined by the church's own music team and other guests. There's no set ticket price; it's a love offering, meaning attendees give what they choose at the door.
Youth programming: Kids' activities run Saturday afternoon starting at 3:30PM at the church ahead of the evening concert.
As it continued to grow, that kitchen study group from the 70s eventually relocated a rented Lutheran school classroom, then shifted to a community center, and finally bought its permanent home on Webster Street in Batavia in 1990. It took its current name, Unity of Fox Valley, in 2011.
"This is much more than a Golden Anniversary celebration," said Rev. Michael Korpan, the church's senior minister. "This is 50 years of a community being there for one another practically as well as spiritually."
Organizers say the event will commemorate the church’s history while celebrating community and honoring the many people who have been part of Unity of Fox Valley over the past five decades.
