Two candidate forums will be held at Batavia City Hall (100 N. Island Avenue) this week, giving local voters a chance to hear directly from candidates ahead of the upcoming November election.
The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County is hosting the forums on Tuesday (9/22) and Wednesday (9/23), both starting at 6:30PM. Each event will cover a different set of contested races and include moderator and audience questions.
The forums aim to give voters an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about their positions on issues affecting their communities.
Here's what to know:
Tuesday's forum: The Sept. 22 forum covers contested Kane County Board races in Districts 2, 11, 13 and 15, Illinois State Senate Districts 33 and 42, and the Kane County Sheriff's race.
Wednesday's forum: The Sept. 23 forum covers Kane County Treasurer, Kane County Clerk, and Illinois State Representative Districts 49, 65 and 83.
How it works: Each segment runs 30-40 minutes with opening statements, moderator questions, and closing statements. Audience members can submit questions ahead of time or during the event, and League volunteers screen them before they reach the moderator.
Attend virtually: BATV will livestream both forums on its YouTube channel, and recordings will stay posted through the election.
Early voting starts Sept. 24 and runs through Nov. 2, and the League recommends mailing ballots by Oct. 20 to make sure they arrive in time.
“The League likens a candidate forum to a job interview,” said Patti Lackman, Co-President of the LWV of Central Kane County. “An applicant wouldn’t expect to be hired for a job if he or she refused to show up for the interview. League of Women Voters candidate forums provide voters the opportunity to hear directly from their candidates, so they can make informed ‘hiring’ decisions when voting.”
