A stretch of pavement on Third Street in downtown Geneva that buckled during this summer’s extreme heat is set to get fixed after the City Council approved a contract with a blacktop company on Monday.

The city is aiming to have it done before the holiday shopping rush.

Here’s what to know:

  • Why repairs are needed: The pavement buckled in the southbound lanes just south of Fulton Street. When city staff inspected the area, they found more problems throughout the block, some reported by residents through SeeClickFix, the city’s online tool for reporting issues.

  • What to expect: The repairs require a full closure of the block between Fulton and South streets. Staff said it will close for roughly a week, with no parking available. Sidewalks will stay open for access to businesses.

  • Fixing the whole block: The company bid $58,445 to repair only the buckled section. Staff instead recommended fixing the entire block for $125,060, which includes pavement patching, crack filling, new curbs and gutters, brick paver replacement, and restoring the strip between the curb and sidewalk.

  • Funding the repairs: With a 10% cushion for unexpected costs, the project can cost up to $137,566. The repair wasn’t in this year’s budget, so it will be paid for with leftover money from the city’s capital infrastructure budget.

The city hasn’t announced when the closure will begin. Read more on page 312 of this agenda document.
