The Batavia Public Library is heading toward a major overhaul with a 12-month renovation project, budgeted at $14.4 million, set to begin in early November.
However, the June 2026 Batavia library board meeting focused on an early complication: estimates put the project about $400,000 over budget, and that figure doesn't yet include planned work on the lower-level public and staff bathrooms.
Here's what to know:
What the project covers: The renovation will update spaces across both floors, including the lobby, adult services area, teen room, the “makerspace,” children's area, and quiet reading room. Upgrades will include lighting, technology, accessibility improvements, and furnishings throughout the building. Architectural renderings are posted on the library's website.
How it's being funded: The project will be paid for through the library's special reserves and bonds supported within its existing Operating Fund. The library says the renovation will not increase property taxes for Batavia residents.
The budget issue: Estimates for millwork, electrical components, and furnishings came in higher than expected. The board discussed the $400,000 shortfall at its June 16 meeting, where the library director said she plans to simplify finishes in staff areas and trim furniture costs while protecting the public-facing portions of the renovation. Staff may also handle moving library collections between floors themselves during construction phases, which could save around $100,000 off a moving estimate that came in above $200,000.
The board is expected to discuss the issuance of bonds at a future meeting.
The library building, which is now more than 24 years old, plans to stay open throughout construction. A public open house is being planned for September to present the final renovation design and take questions from residents.
