Kane County residents will soon be asked to weigh in on decisions that could impact their taxes and local services.

One of those is a sales tax that will be on the ballot in April 2025. The new 0.75% sales tax will be on general merchandise (excluding groceries, medical supplies, and titled vehicles) — and would generate about $51M annually for public services.

Other key points:

  • Budget context: County officials propose this measure to address ongoing budget concerns, as they've been using excess reserve funds to balance the budget in an unsustainable way.

  • November forest preserve vote: A separate referendum will ask voters to consider increasing the Kane County Forest Preserve District's property tax rate limit to support land acquisition and conservation projects.

  • Potential impact: These decisions will affect funding for public safety, mental health programs, transportation and natural area preservation throughout the county.
