St. Charles School District 303 administrators recently discussed concerns about substance abuse in high school bathrooms during an August 5 school board meeting

The discussion was prompted by community members who voiced worries about drug use and distribution on school premises.

Officials acknowledged that substance use is a reality in their schools, mirroring a nationwide trend. They outlined various measures in place to combat the issue, including the presence of student resource officers on campus and adherence to strict disciplinary procedures.

The key points:

  • The district's approach will combine prevention, intervention and support.

  • The strategy includes K-9 searches and supervision patterns based on reports from students and parents.

  • Students can report safety issues discreetly through a new anonymous reporting system this school year.

  • Incident response typically involves an investigation, parent notification and support measures such as counseling sessions.

District leaders emphasized their commitment to student safety, creating a secure learning environment and fostering ongoing communication between the school, parents and the community.
