St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek delivered the annual state of the city address last Thursday, highlighting new developments, business openings and infrastructure projects from the past year.

About 100 attendees packed the Royal Fox Country Club to hear the mayor's presentation.

Key points from the presentation:

  • New public spaces like First Street Plaza opened to pedestrians.

  • Over 1,000 new residential units are under construction or in planning stages.

  • Major street rehab program and bicycle/pedestrian plan implementation is ongoing.

  • Development deal secured to bring Whole Foods to the former Blue Goose site by spring 2025.

  • Pheasant Run resort demolition is imminent, making way for a new industrial park.

  • Dam Task Force is exploring the impacts of potential dam removal downtown.

  • Nearly 20 new businesses opened in the past year with more on the way.

  • Charlestowne Mall redevelopment plans have made significant progress.

During the Q&A, officials assured residents that the city is addressing downtown parking, pedestrian safety on Main St. and Route 31, and redevelopment challenges for the Charlestowne Mall and former police station sites.

What's next: The city's new website launching is expected to launch this year, improving residents’ online experience. Charlestowne Mall concept plans are expected to be submitted over the summer as well.
