St. Charles is engaged in a multi-year project to replace water meters across the city with wireless versions, which means residents will eventually stop seeing workers show up at their doors to take readings.

Here's what to know:

  • The city council approved $100,000 for new meters on March 16, part of an ongoing effort that kicked off in 2023 to modernize the city's water infrastructure.

  • 362 meters have already been replaced since the project began. The city is contracting with a metering company to roll out the program.

  • The new systems do more than just read remotely — they also capture real-time usage data, which can help the city spot leaks earlier and manage water more effectively across the system.

Officials said that this is separate from the lead pipe project.
