St. Charles officials are not in favor of locking in a new 20-year power contract with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA).

At its August 11 meeting, the City Council’s Government Services Committee voted against approving the deal (video recording here), which would have extended the city’s power supply arrangement with IMEA from 2035 to 2055.

Key things to know:

  • The current IMEA contract runs through September 2035, so there’s no immediate threat to service.

  • IMEA had urged the city to commit by August 19, joining 29 of its 32 member municipalities that have already signed on.

  • The agreement would have continued the city’s reliance on IMEA’s coal-heavy power mix, though with gradual reductions over time.

During the meeting, several council members remarked on the thorough discussions and public meetings that led to this decision while thanking the public for its input.

The decision leaves the city’s energy future open for further discussion in the coming years.
