An all-in-jest on-air jab from a Chicago radio show turned into a fun celebration at St. Charles North High School earlier this month.
According to the St. Charles District 303 newsletter, it stemmed from a fall segment on the US 99.5 “Melissa & Austin” morning show, during which producer Kyle Milnamow joked that he dislikes St. Charles North — tying the comment back to a 2008 soccer loss. It all snowballed from there.
Here’s what to know:
A 2008 game sparked it: Milnamow said Larkin High School’s final soccer game ended with a loss to St. Charles North in the 2008 Regional Championship, and he’s been holding a grudge ever since.
School leaders invited him in: After the segment aired, SCN Head Soccer Coach Eric Willson called into the show, and Principal Shanna Lewis later invited Milnamow to come visit the school and see what it’s all about.
Students rolled out the “blue carpet”: The February 5 visit included a big welcome from students and staff, plus drumline performances, handmade signs, school swag, a building tour, lunch in the cafeteria, and an interview with the school newspaper, “The Stargazer.”
If you want the full backstory, here’s the November 5 radio segment where Milnamow gets “called to the principal’s office” and a recap video from the visit on the school’s Instagram.
