New cell-phone restrictions that were rolled out at both St. Charles high schools this fall appear to be off to an effective start.
During a presentation at the recent school board meeting, administrators said the change is already improving focus, social interaction, and more engaged classrooms. They also reported that most students seem to be adjusting smoothly to life without their devices while in school.
Key things to know:
Discipline referrals for phone misuse dropped by 66 percent at St. Charles East and 58 percent at St. Charles North compared to last year.
Teachers report more improved classroom participation, fewer distractions, and a noticeable shift in the amount of in-person conversations happening during lunch.
Administrators say nearly full compliance has been observed in daily walkthroughs.
Officials said that only one repeat device-related offender at both schools combined indicates that discipline measures have been effective.
After years of concern about constant phone use, the district says the early results are proof that setting limits can make a significant difference. Anecdotal feedback also suggests that some parents are implementing similar measures at home.
Get additional background information on the district’s new cell-phone policy.
