St. Charles officials are weighing a new set of local rules for motorized bikes and scooters that would give police the ability to issue city citations instead of state tickets.
The proposal, which mirrors state law, was endorsed by the Government Operations Committee and now heads to the full council for a vote next month.
Key things to know:
The ordinance would apply to e-bikes, e-motos, mopeds, gas-powered bicycles, and scooters, with rules on where they can be used, age limits, and license and insurance requirements.
Fines would begin at $25 for a first offense and could reach $250 for repeat violations, with the possibility of community service after a fourth offense.
City staff emphasized education, noting that the St. Charles Business Alliance may launch a bike safety campaign.
Officials also plan to add sidewalk decals downtown to reinforce that bicycles and scooters are not permitted on sidewalks.
The council is expected to take up the measure at an upcoming meeting.
