In response to growing concerns about the impact of smartphone use and social media on students' well-being, some suburban schools are implementing stricter cellphone policies for the upcoming academic year.
While districts in Evanston and Lake Zurich are introducing "no cell" rules during class time, St. Charles Unit District 303 is working to gather community input on how to best address the issue.
Superintendent Paul Gordon has announced plans to engage parents, students and school staff in a year-long discussion about cellphones in schools.
The district aims to develop a new policy for the 2025-26 school year, focusing on improving students' academic performance and mental health.
Gordon emphasized the importance of community involvement. To facilitate this process, the district will form an advisory committee, conduct surveys, and host focus groups.
According to the St. Charles Education Association, over 70% of teachers experience daily cellphone-related interruptions, and an overwhelming majority support a district-wide policy.
The district plans to open applications for the advisory committee by the end of August, inviting parents, teachers, students and administrators to participate.
