Geneva officials will hold a special City Council meeting Monday night (12/8) to move forward with a major public safety funding question and outline next steps for educating residents about home rule.

  • Referendum: Officials already recommended that the city include a March ballot question asking residents to approve a plan to borrow $59.4 million for a new police station.

  • Funding needed: The bond would fund improvements to Geneva’s public safety facilities but does not cover all projects in the city’s broader Facilities Master Plan.

  • Future plans: If the ballot question is approved, the city plans to begin community outreach that could include building tours, public information sessions, and online resources.

  • Home rule: Council will also consider a resolution to begin a comprehensive, community-wide education effort about potential future home rule status, with a possible voter question targeted for 2028.

Public comment will be taken during the meeting before final council action on both items.
