🚲 Fox River Trail enhancements in St. Charles

The west side of the riverbank near downtown St. Charles.
Whether I’m biking or running, I use the Fox River Trail — one of the Fox Valley’s greatest public assets, in my humble opinion — several times per week for most of the year.
I’m super grateful for easy access to a scenic, generally well-kept riverfront path, which is probably why I tend to overlook its minor shortcomings. So when I encountered Dave Heun’s recent Daily Herald article about planned improvements to the east side of the riverbank in St. Charles, I thought, “Why change anything?”
But reading about how the city transformed the west riverbank in that area changed my perspective. Native grasses replaced minefields of goose droppings. Unkempt embankments became pleasant pedestrian plazas with benches and stone sculptures.
Why not do something similar on the east side?
The East Bank Enhancement Project from the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles would deliver a facelift to the stretch of trail that spans from Illinois Street (the Pollyanna intersection) south to the historic Piano Factory Pedestrian Bridge.
Among the proposed upgrades:
Increasing the trail’s width to ease bike/pedestrian congestion at the pedestrian bridge
Creating more separation between the trail and vehicular traffic on Riverside Drive
Improving landscaping by replacing unappealing concrete slabs with natural stone boulders and limestone
Developing new pedestrian plazas and viewing areas
Providing safe, ADA-compliant river access for anglers and other recreational users
Reading up on this project led me down a rabbit hole exploring the River Corridor Foundation’s other initiatives — but I’ll save those for a future issue.
In the meantime, we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this project!
