Some Metra riders from Mill Creek, Campton Hills, and surrounding neighborhoods say they’re dealing with unpredictable boarding at the La Fox Station, where Chicago-bound trains can arrive on either platform with little or no advance notice.

According to the Friends of La Fox Metra Station group, boarding issues at the Geneva station were resolved earlier this year with extended hours and clearer announcement.

Here’s what the group wants residents to know:

  • Unclear platform arrivals: Chicago-bound trains after 7:59 AM can pull into Platform 1 or Platform 2, despite signage suggesting otherwise and announcements often missing key details.

  • Tight window to switch: When trains arrive on the opposite platform, riders typically have about 90 seconds to make the tunnel crossing, which is difficult for those with luggage, mobility challenges, or anyone who avoids rushing stairs and ramps.

  • Rider workarounds: Frequent passengers often stand where they can look west down the tracks about three minutes before arrival to spot the train’s headlight and adjust platforms.

  • Geneva as an alternative: The group encourages riders who want to avoid ramps, tunnels, and “track anxiety” to board in Geneva, where the station is staffed on weekdays from 5AM to 9PM and offers free daily parking after 8:30AM and on weekends.

La Fox area riders hope raising awareness will prompt clearer communication and improved boarding conditions in the months ahead. You can follow along for updates here.
