The historic Judge Barry House at 217 Cedar Avenue, built in 1844, is at the center of a debate about its potential demolition. Baker Memorial United Methodist Church (the owner) proposed demolition to create additional parking spaces.

The St. Charles Historic Preservation Commission recommended denying a Certificate of Appropriateness for demolition of the property.

Key points:

  • Historic significance: The Judge Barry House holds historical value, associated with early St. Charles history and prominent local figure Judge William D. Barry. The Historic Preservation Commission has since recognized its historical importance.

  • Preservation efforts: Advocates for preserving the house, including the Preservation Partners of Fox Valley, argue that its demolition is premature. They cite a lack of immediate safety concerns and believe alternative uses or buyers for the property could be explored more thoroughly.

  • Church’s perspective: The church seeks to alleviate financial burdens and improve parking availability, essential for community events and congregational needs. However, the proposed parking lot plan has raised concerns within the community.

  • Community impact: Residents and preservation groups highlight the broader implications of losing historic landmarks, emphasizing their role in defining the character and identity of St. Charles.

The city’s Planning & Development Committee will discuss the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation to deny the demolition request on December 9.
