The "Peace Out Batavia" community mural has been taking shape one panel at a time, and residents still have several chances to add their own before the piece is finalized.

The Batavia Park District is inviting the public to keep the painting going through early August. The completed mural is set to be installed on the new Batavia Peace Pedestrian Ramp this September.

Here's what to know:

  • Two months of painting, one big reveal: The mural is a paint-by-number project spanning 52 panels, ranging from small pieces to sections as large as four feet by 10 feet. Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela said that each individual panel will represent a piece of the full picture once completed.

  • Community groups are pitching in: During the June 16 park district meeting, a project representative said 11 Batavia-area organizations signed up to participate. Residents already had a chance to contribute to the mural at Windmill City Fest earlier this month.

  • Upcoming painting days: The paint-by-number format is open to anyone 15 and older, with all supplies provided. Batavia MainStreet staff, board members, and volunteers painted Panel #16 on July 16, and the Park District has lined up several sessions at the Callahan Community Center and the farmers market through early August. See the full list here.

Painters won't see the full picture until the finished mural is installed, and organizers have tucked hidden details into the design for people to spot once it's up.

Each participant who paints a panel gets to keep a small keepsake card showing their specific piece of the mural, so painters can point out their exact contribution once the full installation goes up in September.
