Music doesn't just accompany worship at St. Mark's. It leads people into it.
Walk into St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Geneva on a Sunday morning, and the organ has already set the mood. Sacred, stirring music fills the sanctuary before the first prayer is even spoken.
That sound comes from a 1949 Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ paired with a choir that's grown into one of the most dynamic groups in the western suburbs.
A tradition worth showing up for
St. Mark's has always leaned into music as part of its Anglican heritage. But the program's current momentum traces back to 2018, when Dr. Lance Peeler took over as Organist and Director of Music.
Peeler holds a PhD in liturgical studies and degrees from Drew University and Westminster Choir College. He's spent more than two decades in church music ministry and currently teaches in the Bible, Theology, and Music departments at Wheaton College.
Talented singers anchor the choir
Under Peeler's direction, the choir and its inspiring performances has become a fixture of the St. Mark’s experience. Singers range from 8th graders to senior citizens, amateurs to trained professionals, and they rehearse weekly to prepare for the 9AM and 10:30AM Sunday services, plus Christmas Eve, Easter, and Holy Week.
Their music ranges from classical and spiritual to contemporary styles, backed by organ, piano, and rotating instrumentalists. The sound is intentionally built into service itself, not just background music.
An open invitation
As fall service season begins, St. Mark's is opening its doors to anyone looking for that experience, regular parishioner or not. You don't need a membership or an invitation to sit in on a Sunday service and hear the choir’s memorable music.
