A pair of dogs that escaped their Campton Township property traveled about four miles before breaking into a chicken coop in Geneva Township, resulting in the loss of dozens of birds.

Kane County deputies responded to the property along Keslinger Road after the chickens’ owner reported the incident.

Here’s what to know:

  • The dogs tore open a secured coop, leaving more than 30 chickens dead or injured.

  • Damages, including the birds and the coop structure, were estimated at nearly $1,500.

  • The dogs’ owner received a citation for allowing the animals to run at large.
