Kane County Board members voted 13-7 on Tuesday to publicly censure Board Chair Corinne Pierog, saying she improperly shared confidential information about an employee complaint against a board member.
A censure is a formal public statement of disapproval, according to the state's attorney's office.
Here's what to know:
Role of local members: Geneva board member Leslie Juby said she drafted the censure resolution with guidance from the Kane County State's Attorney's office. Vice Chair Bill Roth of St. Charles ran the meeting after Pierog recused herself.
The complaint: The details are confidential. The state's attorney said her office investigated the complaint and created a corrective plan, and both individuals involved agreed to it. The matter was closed roughly a month ago. Pierog was not involved in the investigation.
Why she was censured: The resolution says the board believes Pierog shared specific details about that investigation with other board members. According to the State’s Attorney, this is not allowed by county policy and state ethics laws.
The decision wasn’t unanimous: An attempt to move the discussion into a closed session failed. Some members questioned whether the censure was a rush to judgment, while others said that Pierog was offered the chance to respond and chose not to.
According to the state's attorney's office, the censure addresses only this single incident, not a broader pattern of behavior.
