Batavia MainStreet announced that it is now accepting applications for the 2027 season of the popular Batavia Boardwalk Shops, the small business incubator program located in downtown Batavia. Applications are open through Jan. 15, 2027.
Entering its eighth season, the Batavia Boardwalk Shops program provides entrepreneurs with an opportunity to test a new concept, expand into a new market, or pilot a downtown retail location in a low-risk setting. The program has become an important part of Downtown Batavia's retail landscape, helping small businesses build their customer base while introducing new products and experiences to the community.
"We're always looking for businesses that bring something new to Downtown Batavia," says Kristen Desler, Assistant Director of Batavia MainStreet. "As we look toward our eighth season, we're being intentional about identifying gaps in our current retail offerings while continuing to welcome the unique, creative and entrepreneurial businesses that have made the Boardwalk Shops so successful. If you have a business or concept you think could be a good fit for the Boardwalk Shops, we'd love to hear from you."
The program features 10 small shops at the corner of Wilson and River Streets, adjacent to the Batavia Farmers' Market and River Street Woonerf. According to Batavia MainStreet, the market draws approximately 3,000 visitors weekly during the season and provides an ideal setting for businesses to connect with both local customers and visitors from throughout the region.
Batavia MainStreet says that since the program began in 2020, Boardwalk Shops participants have generated more than $2.4 million in sales, attracted customers from 200+ unique ZIP codes, and received exposure through Chicagoland television appearances on WGN, FOX and CBS.
More than 25 businesses have gone on to open permanent brick-and-mortar locations following their Boardwalk Shops experience.
The 2027 season will run from May 7 through December 19. Selected businesses receive ongoing support from Batavia MainStreet throughout the season, including training, business development resources and regional marketing opportunities.
