A group of St. Charles residents has initiated a petition urging the City Council to postpone signing a 20-year extension of the city's electrical power generation contract with the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA).
The petition highlights concerns about the city's long-term energy commitments. The current contract with IMEA doesn't expire until 2035, but IMEA is asking St. Charles and other municipalities to sign a new 20-year contract now.
Petitioners argue that the City Council should take more time to evaluate options before committing to such a lengthy agreement. The organizers suggest the city could use the time until 2030 to explore other power sources that might lower costs and increase the use of green energy.
This issue reflects a broader challenge faced by Illinois municipalities in transitioning to cleaner energy sources while managing long-term power contracts..
Residents of St. Charles and surrounding communities can sign the petition online if interested. The organizers emphasize that they are not seeking donations, advising people to decline any donation requests that may appear on the petition page.
