🛒 Which local grocer reigns supreme?

The other day, I came across an intriguing chart that illustrates the Chicago area’s most popular grocery stores:

I imagine these statistics vary depending on which pocket of the metro region you’re analyzing, which makes it interesting to consider where the Tri-Cities might fit in.

For example, according to the dataset used for this chart, Aldi (which is headquartered in Batavia) has more than 160 stores in the region — but only accounts for about 4% of the market share.

I wonder how preferences compare locally?

Based on anecdotal conversations I’ve had or overheard, Aldi certainly seems popular around here. And it also seems like some folks feel a little frustrated with Jewel’s prices lately.

Why don’t we find out? That’s the beauty of running a newsletter — I can just ask you.

People around here (and Midwestern folks in general) take their grocery stores seriously. I’m genuinely excited to see the results.

Chicago Great Western Train 871 in a photo from February 22, 1943 in St. Charles.

Back in 1885, the railroad industry was injecting new life into the Tri-Cities area.

A new freight train line called the Chicago Great Western Railroad had just begun chugging through St. Charles — 11 years after the village was incorporated as a city.

In 1968 the train line merged with the Chicago and North Western Railway (CNW), at which point most of the CGW's tracks were abandoned.
