Geneva officials voted on August 3 to authorize an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation for a Route 31 project that will add a new bus pad and shelter, rebuild sidewalks and ADA ramps, and create a new mid-block crossing at Route 31 and Fargo Boulevard.
That section of sidewalk has been closed for some time, creating an obstacle for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.
Here's what to know:
Bus stop gets a pad and shelter: IDOT is adding a concrete pad and shelter at the existing bus stop on the east side of Route 31, just south of Fargo Boulevard.
Flashing beacon unlikely: When asked about flashing warning light, one official said that IDOT typically doesn't install those. They said nearby flashing beacons in Batavia and St. Charles were installed by the local municipalities after the state declined to do so.
Sidewalk closure remains: An official said the culvert underneath the sidewalk has lost structural integrity, so there's nothing holding the sidewalk in place until it's replaced, creating a safety hazard.
While the cost of the construction itself will be handled by IDOT, Geneva will be on the hook for long-term maintenance costs and obligations.
