Geneva project updates: East State Street reconstruction, Delnor water main, street "sharrows"

Geneva is moving forward with several infrastructure projects, including the East State Street reconstruction, a Delnor Hospital water main upgrade, and new bike-friendly sharrow markings.

As Geneva prepares for a busy stretch of public works activity, residents can expect a mix of long-term construction and shorter-term disruptions.

Here’s an overview of the preparation work being done for the massive East State Street rebuild, a water main project near Delnor Hospital, and new shared-lane pavement markings to better guide cyclists and drivers.

East State Street reconstruction project

According to the City of Geneva, before work can commence on the long-awaited East State Street reconstruction project in Geneva, several companies will first need to relocate their underground utilities.

The Illinois Department of Transportation issued a contract in the spring to R.W. Dunteman to reconstruct State Street east of the Fox River.

The contractor has stated its work will not begin until utility relocations along East State Street are completed, which could take an estimated six to eight months, possibly longer. The utility relocations will require both periodic short-term and potential long-term traffic lane closures along various stretches of the highway.

The actual East State Street reconstruction project is now expected to start in spring 2026 and be completed in late 2027, with punch list items to be finished the following year. The timeline is dependent on how quickly the utility relocations are resolved.

Delnor Hospital water main project

The City of Geneva will begin a water main replacement project near the Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital Health & Fitness Center. The contractor will mobilize equipment the week of July 21, with construction starting the following week.

The improvements are designed to enhance water service reliability for the area. Fitness Center access will remain available during the project.

The City has published a detailed construction map where work will occur this summer. While the main driving lane in the Fitness Center parking lot will be open, other drive aisles may be temporarily closed. Certain sections of the parking lot may be blocked off to accommodate construction.

New “sharrows” on key city streets

Sharrows, or shared-lane markings, are informative road markings indicating that a lane is shared by both cyclists and motorists.

Sharrows help bicyclists maintain a safe distance from parked vehicles, guide cyclists in lanes too narrow for side-by-side travel with vehicles, and offer other safety benefits for cyclists and motorists alike.
