Geneva officials are exploring whether to ask voters next year to approve funding for a new police station — and possibly a separate measure granting the city home rule authority.

The discussion came after years of concerns about the aging police facility.

Key things to know:

  • The Committee of the Whole debated whether to pursue one or two referendum questions — one for a new police station, and another for home rule status.

  • A new station is listed as a top priority in the city’s Facilities Master Plan, which also includes upgrades for fire stations and City Hall.

  • Some officials warned that placing both measures on the ballot could confuse voters or jeopardize both proposals.

  • Others urged the city not to delay, citing a general understanding among residents about the need for improving police facilities.

Officials discussed possibly targeting the March 2026 ballot for a police station referendum, with a possible home rule question later that year.
