Geneva officials are exploring whether to ask voters next year to approve funding for a new police station — and possibly a separate measure granting the city home rule authority.
The discussion came after years of concerns about the aging police facility.
Key things to know:
The Committee of the Whole debated whether to pursue one or two referendum questions — one for a new police station, and another for home rule status.
A new station is listed as a top priority in the city’s Facilities Master Plan, which also includes upgrades for fire stations and City Hall.
Some officials warned that placing both measures on the ballot could confuse voters or jeopardize both proposals.
Others urged the city not to delay, citing a general understanding among residents about the need for improving police facilities.
Officials discussed possibly targeting the March 2026 ballot for a police station referendum, with a possible home rule question later that year.
