Geneva is taking a formal step toward joining the Bird City Illinois program, a statewide initiative that encourages communities to protect bird habitats, expand natural spaces, and offer more educational opportunities around local wildlife.

A new resolution headed to the City Council would officially endorse Geneva’s application and direct staff to finalize the certification process.

What you should know:

  • According to the City Council agenda, the city has already completed many of the required actions through its Natural Resources Committee and ongoing sustainability efforts.

  • The resolution supports applying for Bird City Illinois certification, which recognizes towns that prioritize bird conservation and environmental stewardship.

  • Communities must meet several standards, including holding an annual World Migratory Bird Day event and completing habitat, education, and sustainability initiatives.

  • If approved, staff will submit the final application, building on the city’s broader 2030 Strategic Plan goals related to environmental responsibility.
