Geneva is moving to add security cameras to three city buildings that currently have none — a gap city staff acknowledged has created problems in the past.

Here's what to know:

  • What would be installed: The plan calls for 29 cameras total across city hall, the police station, and the public works facility — nine cameras at each of the first two buildings, 11 at public works. The cameras will connect to Geneva's existing cloud-based video monitoring system.

  • Why now? City staff told the committee there have been incidents at city buildings where camera footage would have been useful. Documents say that the project would also improves safety for staff who work varying hours at those facilities.

  • Contract details: The city put the project out for public bid in January and received 13 qualified submissions. Information Controls Inc. of Loves Park came in as the low qualified bidder at $36,853, with the final contract set at $40,538 to allow for change orders up to 10%. The cameras are expected to last roughly 10 years.

Work is targeted for completion by May 31. The Committee of the Whole recommended approval; the City Council is expected to take final action at its next meeting.
