Geneva leaders are moving closer to finalizing a multi-year facilities plan that would revamp many city-owned buildings, including police and fire stations and City Hall.

At the June 24 Committee of the Whole meeting, officials reviewed the proposed framework and narrowed in on a few key priorities. A formal vote on the plan is expected July 7.

What to know:

  • Police station: A new police station is the top priority, with a proposed location on South Street near the athletic fields, skate park, and public works building. The projected price tag is around $48M. The current station is considered outdated and too small to meet operational needs.

  • City Hall: The city is considering four options for City Hall and the old library, ranging from $34M–$42M. Most city officials support preserving the original Carnegie library portion in a hybrid renovation.

  • Fire stations: Under the proposed plan, Fire Station 2 (on the west side off Fargo) would be torn down and rebuilt nearby for an estimated cost of about $20M. Station 1 (near East Side Drive and State Street) would receive capital upgrades over time at a projected cost of about $8M.

  • Overview: The total cost of all improvements is projected between $132M and $139M, but the plan is designed to roll out in phases and still requires discussion. Some projects may be eligible for future referendums.

City leaders designed the plan based on public input from recent surveys. They say the improvements are needed to address aging infrastructure, space constraints, and long-term staffing needs.
