The historic Alexander Brothers' Blacksmith Shop on Geneva’s east side near the State Street Bridge is once again at the center of a preservation debate.

The Shodeen Family Foundation, owners of the 1843 limestone structure, have filed a new petition for partial demolition following a court defeat last month.

The Geneva Historic Preservation Commission has scheduled a public hearing for July 16 to consider the request.

Shodeen's new proposal seeks to remove the fire-damaged roof and deteriorated wooden elements, citing safety concerns. The property, located at the former Mill Race Inn site, has been a point of contention since its purchase by Shodeen in 2014.

As the community awaits a decision, the fate of this centuries-old blacksmith shop remains uncertain. Residents appear eager to learn how Geneva plans to balance its heritage with future development needs.

Residents interested in the issue are encouraged to attend the public hearing at City Hall on July 16 at 7PM.
