During Monday’s City Council meeting, Geneva officials discussed a proposal that could transform an underused riverfront building into a high-end event venue in the future — though it’s worth noting that no city money has been committed and no final approvals have been granted.
Here’s what to know:
Early green light: Officials approved a TIF “inducement” resolution tied to 28 North Bennett Street, which allows a potential developer to continue planning with designs and studies that could be reimbursed later if a final deal is approved.
What’s being proposed: City staff described interest from a Chicago event planning firm that wants to convert the existing office building into a luxury waterfront venue for weddings and private events, with indoor space for about 175 guests and some outdoor use along the river.
No funding approved yet: Officials repeatedly emphasized that this vote does not approve TIF dollars, a redevelopment agreement, or the project itself — those decisions would come later and require additional public votes.
Parking concerns raised: During public comment, a resident voiced worries about event-related parking spilling into riverfront and public spaces, suggesting that the issue could come up again as planning progresses.
City officials said they expect to return with more concrete details if the developer continues moving forward.
