Geneva officials say the eastbound lanes of East State Street (Route 38) are on track to reopen around Thanksgiving (weather permitting).
Public works staff gave an update during Monday’s City Council meeting, calling the project the largest road and infrastructure job Geneva will see short of rebuilding the Fox River bridge.
Here’s what to know:
Delays continue for now: Crews are running new water lines and fire hydrant connections, limiting traffic to a single lane. Staff suggested Monday that drivers should use alternate routes for the next 5–8 days.
Looking ahead to winter: The goal is to keep all four lanes open through winter with temporary lane markings. Work will halt during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods per state rules. In spring, westbound traffic will shift onto the new eastbound lanes so crews can rebuild the westbound side.
Side streets may be limited: Not every cross street will reopen right away. In places where there’s more than about a 4- to-inch height difference between the old and new pavement, staff said those intersections can’t fully reopen. Some will be limited to right turns only.
Bumps in the road: Crews have hit several surprises along the way, including abandoned underground storage tanks with no record of their existence. That discovery halted work for about four weeks.
The full project is expected to be completed in late 2027. For the latest closure information, you can check out the city’s road construction news page, which gets updated each week.
