An anonymous text urging some Geneva residents to oppose a “fifth extension” for the Duke & Lee’s property caused some confusion ahead of Monday’s Geneva City Council meeting.
Mayor Kevin Burns addressed the topic right off the bat at the meeting.
In reality, there was no extension request on the agenda — and by the filing deadline earlier that day, the property owner hadn’t submitted anything. As a result, the site’s special zoning simply expired, reverting to its original commercial designation.
Zoning reverted to commercial: With the extension window expired, the site automatically reverted to its base commercial zoning from commercial mixed use, which was the designation from a previously approved plan.
New proposals start over: Any future project will have to go through Geneva’s full review process — staff evaluation, Plan & Zoning Commission hearing, and then City Council review and approval.
Public will be notified: Residents can follow future proposals through the city’s “Notify Me” system to receive development updates directly.
For now, no active proposals are under consideration, but any future plans will have to start from square one.
