National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 25, and several locations across the Tri-Cities are accepting expired or unwanted medications.
The event, coordinated with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, gives residents a free, anonymous way to clear out medicine cabinets without flushing pills down the drain or tossing them in the trash.
Here's what to know:
Geneva, 10AM-2PM: The Geneva Police Department will collect medications at the front desk, 20 Police Plaza. Accepted items include prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, pet medications, and vape pens with batteries removed. More info.
St. Charles, 10AM-2PM: Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care is hosting a collection site on the east side of the parking lot by Kirk Road at 2900 Foxfield Road. Naloxone training and distribution will be available on site. No sharps or liquids accepted. More info.
Elburn, 10AM-2PM: Senator Don DeWitte is hosting a drop-off event in partnership with the Elburn Police Department at the police station. More info.
Batavia, anytime: The Batavia Police Department operates a permanent medication drop box in the front lobby of City Hall. The locked collection box is available 24/7 and under surveillance. More info.
Pills should be taken out of their original containers and placed in a plastic bag. Liquids must stay sealed in their original containers. No sharps, needles, ointments, or illegal substances.
Proper disposal keeps unused medications out of the wrong hands and out of local water systems.
