Coyotes are a real concern for many folks living in the Tri-Cities area, especially during the winter months when they’re more active.

One resident shared details behind multiple close calls at this week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, suggesting that the animals are acting bolder than in years past and raising safety concerns for kids, pets, and nearby schools.

Key things to know:

  • A Mahoney Creek resident reported repeated daytime coyote sightings and described a recent chase involving his dog that prompted school disruptions and a police search nearby.

  • The resident urged the city to track coyote reports, expand public education, and communicate clearer safety guidance to the community.

  • Several alderpersons said they’ve experienced similar sightings in their own neighborhoods and expressed interest in reviewing how other municipalities handle wildlife concerns.

  • The city indicated it will gather more information, revisit IDNR guidance, and look at potential next steps.

The conversation emphasized the potential value of a coordinated response as coyote encounters continue to rise.
